In Memoriam
Barbara B. Tobin

Barbara B. Tobin, 92, of Westerly, R.I., died at home on July 15, 2008. She was the wife of the late John D. Tobin, MD. She is survived by her four children, John D. Tobin, Jr., MD and his wife Gail, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Elizabeth T. Tonkin and her husband Russell, of Plymouth, Vt.; Thomas L. Tobin, Esq. and his wife Kathryn, of Pawcatuck, Conn.; and the Rev. Roger M. Tobin and his wife Janis, of Coral Gables, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and one great grandson.

Born in Indiana, Barbara graduated from the University of Indiana and received a Master’s Degree in Nursing from Case Western Reserve University. Her nursing career took her from the time of World War II through the era of modern blood banking.

During her 33 years in Minneapolis, she served on the vestry and altar guild of the Cathedral Church of St. Mark. She devoted much of her time and energy to supporting her pediatrician husband, nurturing and encouraging her children and pursuing her own professional nursing career.

After retiring to Westerly, Barbara volunteered in numerous capacities at the Westerly Public Library, Christ Church, the Westerly College Club, and other community organizations. Because of her compassion for the welfare of the homeless, she was an active participant in the founding of the W.A.R.M. Shelter in Westerly and continued to be a supporter and volunteer there for many years.
She could be seen on the beach, on the tennis court or organizing gatherings for family, friends and neighbors. She was also an avid reader and crossword puzzle fanatic.

Dedicated to her family and committed to the well-being of others, her life was a comfort and an inspiration to all who knew her.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church, Westerly, on Saturday, July 19 at 11 a.m. Reception in the parish hall will follow the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to the W.A.R.M. Shelter, 56 Spruce St., Westerly, R.I. 02891.
